"An Airship?" The surprise is evident in his voice as he follows Fjord down below deck. He manages to float down the ladder-stairs reasonably well, but does finally settle his feet onto the wood to accommodate for the lower ceiling. Tension creeps up the back of his neck, tightening between his shoulders. Essek tries to hide it behind amusement, instead.
"Seeing as I have no idea what either of those, I hope so as well." A pause in the narrow corridor. "Did you make them?"
"Yeah, it's docked in the hangar a-ways out of the City, it can't fly but ... who knows, with enough time and worship to the Augur. I took Aphrodite there when we had an island-wide blizzard."
Heading into the thankfully spacious cabin, he gestures to a comfy armchair beside the table upon which maps of Exandria, and one in-progress of the Island, are spread out. The Bag of Holding sits at one of the table-legs.
Fjord ferrets through a brown bag, bringing out two burgers and sorting fries onto the paper.
"Did I make these? No," but he looks similarly amused (it's good to see Essek smile as Fjord fails his perception check), "They're from the diner. Luckily, I brought some for snacks tonight, but I'm glad I get to share dinner with you instead."
"Ah." Can't fly - well that makes a little more sense, he supposes. But it also makes him wonder...bestowing Fjord with a workable sailing ship that only requires wind and a handful of people likely meant that the Augur didn't expect them to make it far should they attempt to sail away.
Essek wanders curiously closer to the maps near the indicated chair, leaning over them to examine their detail. He feels a strange pang of homesickness, seeking out the familiar areas. Rosohna, Nicodranas, Eiselcross... dark fingertips straying lightly over the parchment.
I'm glad to share dinner with you. A softer, more genuine smile takes over now as he glances up, then away again.
"I see, thank you." He gestures at the expanse of the cabin. "So, is this where we will find you more often, now?"
"In the days, maybe, I'll be storing up food downstairs in the galley for whenever we need to leave the island in a hurry. If there's anything like another blizzard, we'll be fucked on land, last time we couldn't stay in the house because there were too many holes in it."
He takes a seat on the corner beside Essek, eating the burger with his hands. No utensils here for fancy elves!
Fjord eyes him, taking in the soft smiles and naked interest in his maps.
"If we could sail home, where would you want to go?"
"I see. Well...hopefully we are out of the cold season, at least. Assuming Erku abides by such things as we understand them."
There's never any telling, really.
Essek carefully picks up the...sandwich? Bread and meat together. It smells good, at least. He's about to take a bite when the question catches him a little off guard, pausing. Brows furrow a moment in consideration, glancing back at the outline of Wildemount with a little ache in his chest.
"I...don't know. So much of it is...unwelcoming for me, at present. Perhaps Tal'Dorei."
"I'd like to go there too. Maybe," offering a casual suggestion as he leans forward, "we could figure out a spell to keep the sun off you, and you could come see the Menagerie Coast first-hand."
Taking Essek all along the markets would be fun. Fjord bets the elf would get into ferreting through the goodies to be found there.
It's an incredibly sweet notion, one that pulls a soft, genuine smile to his lips, the corners of his eyes crinkling in fondness. There's a familiar prickling of heat at the very tips of his ears, a happy warmth spreading in his chest.
Essek looks at Fjord, a little aching - but it's a good ache.
"I should like that, I think. A change from the the deep freeze of Eiselcross, and whatever this is."
"Maybe the southern heat will keep that blush in place."
He shamelessly waggles his brows, enjoying seeing Essek ruffled. On impulse, Fjord dusts his hands clean and turns his chair around to face his guest, spreading his legs. Patting them. His gaze never wavers as he offers a hand to draw Essek down onto his lap.
"I can give it my best attempt right now, in fact."
Well that certainly causes it to become more apparent, but the smile only widens - slightly, but not imperceptibly. He shakes his head, but out of fondness rather than refusal. The burger floats back to the table so that he can take Fjord's hand, fingers sliding delicately along his palm, and then floats himself into that invitation. Settled into that lap, Essek leans forward, nestling into strong arms.
The burger floats, of course it does. Burgers look so unnatural in the air, why does Essek subvert the natural order like this? Sigh.
His arm comes around Essek's back as Fjord reels his Floaty Fuck onto his lap, keeping that hand in his. He brings it to his lips, soft kisses drifting over elegant fingers and knuckles. Tusks bump a little.
"You're not opposed to being held for a while, are you?"
Essek watches the almost delicate way those lips play over his hand. Admiring him up close like this, he can't help remembering how much shorter those tusks had been the first time the Nein had come to Rosohna. It's lovely to see them now.
"Not for a little while, no," he lilts back. As soon as Fjord finishes his attentions, he deftly reverses the hold of their hands. Now it is his turn to trail soft kisses over knuckles and lovely green skin.
A shiver runs down his spine and he sweeps his hand up and down Essek's without thinking, like petting a spicy moorbounder. The lips gliding over his knuckles are beautiful and he tries to lure Essek closer by drawing their hands toward his mouth.
"You're looking very handsome today, by the way."
As if Essek ever has off days.
Can he steal a kiss? Deception is completely negligent, he wants him to see his ploy for what it is.
That feels...really nice, actually. It's minute, but there's a distinct unwinding of tension from between his shoulders. For a moment he savors the feeling, eyes drifting closed with Fjord's hand pressed to his lips.
The compliment receives a smile halfway between knowing and pleased. Fjord successfully steals a kiss, and receives another, freely given, in return.
"Thank you," Essek murmurs, thumb swiping idly over green knuckles. "You seem very at home, here."
Essek gazes at him through half lidded violet eyes, allowing himself to be moved. The smile is halfway to a smirk; Fjord really is laying it on thick, but he can't help but be charmed anyway.
"I do miss them," he acknowledges softly, relaxing a little more into the hand at his back. "Our stars in Exandria. Sailing beneath them on the way to Eiselcross was...one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen."
His hand at Essek's back guides him closer, enough that Fjord can nose his way up a neck, lips catching on the curve of a jaw. His hand drops to Essek's lap, finding a thigh to pet.
"We'll make sure to get you out more when we return home. Do you think you'll still feel like going on another adventure?"
A soft noise hums from his lips, chin tilting upwards and eyes drifting shut as he leans into the attention, much like a pleased cat into a particularly pleasurable touch.
"Mm...perhaps...not for some time." His words are warm, but wry, hands sliding to drape over Fjord's shoulders. "I think I would rather like to surround myself with all of the familiar comforts of home for a while, first."
Essek's expression turns thoughtful, frowning a little. "I...do not have many favorite places in the city itself, aside from my own home. I did not leave it very often if I was not performing my duties as Shadowhand.
The Dynasty has been home to many peoples not welcome in other parts of the world for nearly two millennia. On the few occasions I have left it, it was always strange to me, seeing so many humans around."
"Port Damali has a lot of humans compared to most places, it's kind of their corner of the coast in the same way Rexxentrum is their main city inland. You should come to Nicodranas if there's nothing waiting for you back in Rosohna, then."
Fjord sits up to poke him on the jaw with his nose.
That brings a faint smile back to his face, chin tilting upward and leaning into the touch.
"Hm, you will have to. It is quite sunny there. I may have to continue being primarily nocturnal." A careful pause. "But...I should like to see the city again, when things are not so..."
With Essek on his lap and Fjord nosing at the elf's temple, arms around him, it feels cosy in the captain's cabin as if Essek is, momentarily, Fjord's responsibility. Anxieties and all.
"When we get home there are loose ends we need to tie up, but we won't be doing that forever. Any of us can disguise you, if you feel uncomfortable walking around in plain sight back home.
"We'll stick together, that's how you know things will work out."
The closeness of the cabin, shut off and isolated from all the rest, the warmth and strength of the arms around him and the pleasant cadence of Fjord's voice, soft and reassuring, all wrap him in a protective intimacy. The thought of home aches, both in its absence and in knowing what likely awaits, but at least in this moment, it is ok for it to hurt.
Still, Essek sighs a little, curling against him a little more, inch by inch.
"I know...and I appreciate the offer. Truly, I do. But...I fear that it won't be long before the Dynasty's gaze will be more closely upon me. I cannot expect you all to protect me forever."
The breath Fjord lets out is astonished and annoyed.
"Of course you can. If the Dynasty comes for you we'll fuck their shit up. Okay? What do you think you're going to do, wander off in the dead of night and give yourself up to spare us? You're cool, you know, but you're also dumb as a brick sometimes.
"And the Empire? Will you fight the elite soldiers of the Cerberus Assembly as well as my homeland, both? You would only heighten their determination."
Essek shakes his head, shifting in discomfort. "No. If I give myself up I am forfeiting my life, and I want to live. Despite all of the terrible things that I have done, there is more yet that I want to learn. The mysteries of dunamis and the Luxon...no one else will do the work. Even if I am exiled from my homeland, I want to continue. But I will not continually ask you all to risk your lives for my sake. And I am sure there are other things you all wish to do, your own futures to pursue."
