[She waits until she hears from Caleb that he's finished up for the evening as they'd discussed, and then Jester's on a mission; she marches into town to pick up her order from the Limp Noodle Shop, which consists of two big plastic containers of a noodle dish called 'ramen,' along with an order of plain pork dumplings for Caleb and an order of spicy ones for herself. She brings it back to the Neinhaus and gets everything all set up in the living room; the noodles go into nicer bowls with forks, because she doesn't know how to use the sticks they came with yet. The dumplings all go on a plate, and then everything is arranged on the coffee table with a couple of bottled fizzy drinks in bright colors from the ramen shop.
She shoots off a quick text to Caleb once everything's all set up.]
Meet me in the living room! Everything's all ready for you 3:)
[ Caleb's response comes quickly. He's returned to his room to make sure it's suitable if Jester wants to have another look at the wall, but he's still dressed for--and hair slightly messy from--a long few hours of arcane tinkering, and hasn't thought to change. ]
I'll be right down.
[ Less than a minute later, he does. The smell of the food Jester has brought home wafts all the way up the stairs, and Caleb follows his nose to find a spread of noodles and dumplings, and Jester. ]
Oh, good. I like this place.
[ It's odd how easy it is to follow a whim and lean down to press a grateful kiss to Jester's temple, just below the curl of a horn. Mild, as far as affectionate gestures go, but meaningful that he feels able to do it at all. ]
[Jester's got herself situated on the sofa, dressed in a green plaid skirt and a fluffy white sweater that's become one of her favorite outfits, and she looks up beaming as Caleb comes into the room.]
I remembered you mentioning it at some point! It smells so yummyβ
[Caleb kisses her on the temple, and she nearly melts, her expression scrunching up in delight for a moment.]
Oh! Yeah, of course! No problem at all! [She pats the sofa next to her.] Saved you a spot.
[ That his simple affection makes Jester happy makes it doubly incredible. As Caleb settles on the couch beside her his fingers brush near her wrist to feel the soft, fluffy texture of her sweater. ]
This is cute.
[ It also makes her tits look amazing, which isn't the kind of compliment he can bring himself to offer, even if he suspects Jester might appreciate it. Keeping that thought to himself, he reaches for the bowl of ramen in front of him and drags his fork through the broth to collect a good variety of ingredients. ]
Breakfast must have gone well, ja? There weren't a lot of leftovers.
[Jester is highly aware that the sweater makes her tits look good, which is part of why she wore it, truth be told. She starts to load her own fork up with noodles, ready to see if they taste as good as they smell, and nods at Calebβs observation with a derisive snort.]
Yeah, too well. I literally hid that bacon from Beau so that you could have some. Iβve never seen her eat that fast in my life!
[And then her fork disappears into her mouth, accompanied by a groan as she tastes the broth and noodles and fatty meat all at once.]
[ Caleb is still half smiling when he takes his first bite a moment after Jester, and hums in agreement around his mouthful. It's a few bites later that finally takes notice of the drinks on the table. ]
...oh! What are these?
[ The bowl is set aside in favor of picking up one of the colorful bottles and peering at it curiously. Given their track record with strange drinks, though, there's a modicum of wariness there too. ]
[Jester slurps up the last of her bite of noodles, wiping broth off her nose where it's splattered in the process, and reaches for her own drink. She'd gotten a strawberry one for herself, and something called 'blue-razzberry' for Caleb, unable to resist the meme.]
They're supposed to be sweet and sort of fizzy. Don't worry, I triple-checked that they're not aphro'd, and I even asked a regular at the restaurant to be sure.
[ Knowing that Jester checked ahead is a relief. Not that their previous experience bothers him, but Caleb would much prefer to be aware of possible effects beforehand. ]
Good to know. Not that the last time was not...enjoyable. But it is better not to be taken by surprise.
[ Caleb does not think about Jester's mouth, and instead pops the drink opens with a subtle fizzing sound. It tingles against his tongue and down his throat with the first sip and tastes very sweet and vaguely fruity, but not any particular flavor he could readily identify. He can only really compare the sensation to champagne, which he's had only sparingly before. With slightly perplexed expression that says he is still trying to make up his own mind, Caleb decides, ]
Of course, [Jester laughs, tongue sticking out between her teeth as she presses the marble through the little gap with a loud pop!.]
Oh! Wow, that's crazy! [She lifts the strawberry drink to her lips and tries a sip. Immediately, her eyes go wide and she tips the bottle back a little further. She swallows, a giggle going right down along with it.]
Oh my gosh, it's so good! I bet it's way too sweet for you, huh? [She pokes him in the side teasingly.]
[ The absolute best thing about this is watching Jester's utter delight. Caleb grins as he instinctively squirms away from her poke, but takes another sip from his bottle defiantly. ]
It is a little on the sweet side, but I can stomach it.
[ Maybe. There's a whole bottle, and it seems like he's just drinking slightly flavored bubbly liquid sugar. ]
[ The curl of Jester's tail has him crowding close again, regaining the ground he lost squirming away from her poke. ]
Well, I think? Lately we have mostly been attempting new projects just for fun, as doing true research is...difficult here.
[ His shoulders lift and drop in a half-hearted shrug. ]
I have been inspired lately by a few sources--our device's video capabilities, the Sending spell, and our previous shared experience--to create a spell that would allow the transference of one physical sense from the caster to a known target for a limited amount of time, likely only a minute or less. But the concept is interesting. Imagine being able to send the taste of your favorite pastry to anyone you wanted to share it with.
[While she listens, Jester sets her soda back down and goes for the noodles again, slurping them into her mouth while Caleb explains what he's been working on. Her eyebrows disappear into her bangs at that last part.]
Um, that sounds really cool. [She dips her head toward Caleb, horn jewelry jangling as always.] If you need a test subject, Caleb, you know I'm always happy to help you!
[ Oh, right. Dinner. That ramen is plenty savory enough to cut through the soda's undefinably flavored sweetness, which he's glad for. Small doses are more tolerable. ]
That would be very helpful when we progress a little further. I'll let you know when.
[ He gives a smile, warm and honestly grateful for the offer, over the edge of his bowl before he forks noodles into his mouth. It's not the best look, but they've definitely seen each other at way worse. ]
Do you have thoughts about how you want to go about mural preparations tonight?
[She shoves a piece of rich, fatty pork in her mouth on her next bite and hums happily at how good it is, swallowing before she answers.] Great! I can't wait to see what you come up with.
[Jester's far too busy with her own noodles to worry about anyone's table manners, not that she ever would. Swallowing thickly, she nods, tucking her hair behind her ear with one hand.]
Yeah! I was thinking if you could set the illusion up right against the wall behind your bed, I could sketch it out from that and know exactly how it'll look.
[ Caleb nods as he takes another bite, swallowing quickly to answer. ]
Sure. That will be easy enough.
[ It isn't difficult to recall a time closer to when he and Jester had first met that a spell like Major Image would have been well beyond his capabilities. A lot has changed. ]
We'll head up after dinner.
[ Wherein his ramen and the less spicy dumplings Jester had thoughtfully ordered for him are finished off completely, but his soda is left more than half full as he eventually has to admit defeat. ]
[Jester polishes off her own ramen and dumplings with impressive gusto, tilting the bowl back to finish off the broth and washing it all down with the rest of her soda. Burping into her sleeve, she grins at Caleb.]
[ Having finished both their food and catching each other up on their day so far, it's time. Caleb stacks their empty bowls, intending to make a brief pit stop to deposit them in the kitchen sink on their way upstairs. ]
[Jester helps him gather all the dishes, piling everything neatly, and then starts toward the stairs.]
I have to grab my sketchbook! I'll meet you up there, okay?
[She heads up to her and Beau's room, where she scoops up her sketchbook from her bedside table along with a few pencils, before heading back down the hall toward Caleb's room. She doesn't go in just yet, because it feels rude to intrude on his personal space without him, so instead she just waits for him out in the hall, humming a happy tune to herself under her breath.]
[ Caleb is quick about getting everything cleaned up, leaving the living room without evidence of their dinner. He follows Jester up the stairs in just a few few minutes and finds her waiting for him by his door, sketch book in hand. The door is not only unlocked, but partially ajar. Caleb pushes it open the rest of the way, glancing over his shoulder with a small smile as he leads the way inside. ]
I meant it when I said that you are welcome.
[ The lamp on the desk and the much smaller one on a shelf above his bed are already on, illuminating the space with pale gold light. There have been a couple minor changes, most notably a woven circle rug covering the floor in the center of the room and new curtains draped over the window, both a combination of warm green, purple, red, and yellow. ]
It was a good suggestion. That and the curtains alone have made the space a little more welcoming.
[ After easing the door shut behind them, he joins her. The rug is big, wide enough to touch the edge of Veth's old bed and his desk chair, encompassing most of the center of the room. It's not soft exactly, but nicer on bare feet than the wooden floorboards. ]
[Her toes wiggle into the rug a little, getting a proper feel for it. Then, deciding it's the perfect place from which to observe the illusion, plops down on the floor right where she stands, settling her sketchbook into her lap and pulling out a pencil.]
Speaking of which, let's do this thing! I'm excited to get inspired.
For Caleb
