I am not saying no. I would be foolish to. Just that...there is a discussion that we should have first about what this means for both of us, and this isn't the place for it. But sit with me for a bit tonight. [ He urges. This isn't where he wants to leave things, awkward and uncertain. They can still enjoy each other's company. The last thing Caleb wants is for Keyleth to think she's suddenly unwanted. ]

I have never really given it any thought before. True love as a concept seems dubious to me, as I've loved people and been certain it would last a lifetime and it...did not. But I think it is possible to, ah...cultivate that sort of intense and powerful love, with work.

[ The fingers of his other hand snap as he thinks of a metaphor that would appeal to her. ]

Like growing a plant from a seed. I think that is the deepest kind of love.

[after all, that isn't so far from how she's done it in the past.

she looks over at Vax, with Shaun]

and I guess, just like a seed, you can't know how it's going to turn out in the end.

Exactly. What you get may not be exactly what you expected. But if you have worked hard to nurture it and care about its growth, then the kind of plant almost does not matter. It is beautiful and valuable regardless.

[ And when he follows her gaze, he squeezes her hand. He knows enough to at least make a guess at what she might be thinking about. ]

I don't think there's any such thing as a bad plant if you've grown it yourself.

Mm. Though there is always a possibility a plant will grow in a way that can't be sustained, or even that it will turn out to be poisonous. Still, that doesn't mean it wasn't important.

[ After a moment,
Caleb scoffs under his breath, shaking his head. ]

That doesn't really make sense. I think my metaphor has run its course.

Perhaps. But it was good while it lasted. I liked it.
