[ That sure is a brand new face in his kitchen. But it isn't the first time tonight, and probably won't be the last, given how word of this little gathering seems to have gotten out. The sleeves of Caleb's sweater are rolled up past his elbows, arms jammed into the soapy water filling the sink, so he has to sort of look over his shoulder to address Matt directly if he doesn't want to drip suds everywhere. ]

Ja, of course, help yourself. They are all clean. Not dry yet, but--

[ Along with a tilt of his head toward the dish towel on the counter beside him, there's a flicker of a warm smile. ]

That is easily fixed.

[semicharmed]

[ Oh a relieved sigh, ] Oh thank God.

[ Look Matt really wants a drink!! He grabs up the towel and a cup and dries it off. That done, he gestures towards the rest of the damp glasses. ]

Want me to do the rest of these while I'm here?

[ There's an off chance that washing dishes is this guy's cherished alone time, but it seems like offering to help is the literal least Matt can do. ]

[ There aren't so many glasses that Caleb really needs assistance, but the offer is kind one, especially from a stranger. He finishes rinsing out the glass in his hand and sets it beside the sink with the others, giving a positive-sounding hum as he does. ]

That would be helpful. We can make quick work of these and get back to drinking.

[ He gives Matt another look over, thinks about that relieved sigh at being offered a glass. ]

Or...perhaps start drinking, in your case. Are you only just getting here and already offering to help with the dishes?

[ Matt, pleased to be useful-ish, sets to work, and is midway through toweling off his second glass when that rather penetrating question hits. He glances to Caleb sharply, caught-out look melting quickly to a sheepish smile. ]

Well--that's okay. Least I can do to contribute, right? No good party happens without some sweat and tears.

[ That sheepish smile makes Caleb's widen visibly, sort of amused but also thinking he might understand some of that urge to be useful. He'd give Matt a companionable pat on the shoulder if his hands weren't currently wet and soapy. ]

We'll make sure you get some of the good stuff.

[ Matt's help does make the process a lot faster, because when Caleb finishes washing the few cups that are left in the sink, he grabs a second dishtowel and begins drying as well. ]

Who was it that dragged you here?

[ Assuming that someone must have. Just from this short exchange, he could list at least three people who currently live in the house who would likely be interested in Matt. Possibly more, pending further conversation. ]

Oh--

[ Matt shakes his head. That sheepish expression isn't going anywhere anytime soon. ]

I ... actually was just in the neighborhood, trying to get the lay of the land. I saw the lights. [ He pulls a fake wince, 85% in jest. 75% for sure. ] And everybody seems really nice, so I'm sure they wouldn't kick me out?

[ Please kind sir, don't bounce him. ]

Ah.

[ Thankfully, Caleb isn't particularly shocked. More acknowledging, readjusting his framing of the situation. Matt's been a model guest so far, regardless of how he got here. ]

The lights are a little gaudy, but that is what Veth likes.

[ He sets down one last glass, now arranged on the kitchen counter in a neat, clean row--soon to be completely ruined, probably, but he's done his part. That won't be his problem. ]

Luckily we are used to taking in strays. Welcome to the Neinhaus.

[ Matt is visibly surprised by the word "strays." But he laughs, saluting Caleb with his empty glass. ]

Very nice to be here. I'm Matt.

[ He thought the lights were cute, frankly. Well, he thought they were a sign from the universe. But it doesn't do to argue with one's host! He just makes a mental note to track down this Veth person later and affirm their taste. ]
