Or a certain someone just had that much time on his hand that twisting flowers into ornaments is the closest thing to productivity for lack of something meaningful to do. There are faint imprints on his fingers from toying with the plants for too long, and soft grass stains and damp patches on his legs and knees.
"I knew the blue would look best!" as soon as the words leave his mouth, the color flutters along the rim of the crown to a more vivid purple. The frown on Shi Qingxuan's face lasts momentarily before he breaks into his customary, unassuming grin.
"Guess you can pull off every color, daozhang, with a pretty face like that."
He's armed with no small amount of different crowns, and yet the bushes around them aren't lacking for more blossoms. Originally, Shi Qingxuan has had marched out of his shelter for a purpose, but an hour or so of napping in the sun and plucking flowers have thoroughly cured him of the presumption of being useful.
no subject
The carefree individual gives off such an infectious atmosphere that he finds himself taking the smallest of steps closer. Perhaps he'd also set out for a reason - specifically, to nullify threats and retrieve any supplies - but this looks like a much more pleasant way to spend his time. No sooner than he even entertains the thought of approaching is he addressed.
His hand rises to his mouth and he laughs behind his sleeve, lowering his gaze to one of the other, unworn crowns.
"You're far too kind, really. But I'm certain that you're wearing it better than I would. Blue and purple both look very lovely on you."
Now that he's sighted again, it's as embarrassing to praise for appearance as it is to be praised!
no subject
Is he referring to himself or to the young cultivator? Shi Qingxuan, more or less, is perpetually in a pleasant state of mind, never mind one he's been lulled into by virtue of soothing flora and fauna. He's never one to keep up his guard unless through some conscious efforts, but past sensing a benign life force blooming under the skin of the stranger, he doesn't make a move to investigate further.
He's come here for something, and now everything else is vastly more attractive than his original purpose that has already slipped his mind. And most attractive of all is his new friend, he's decided.
Speaking of which.
"You're human, aren't you?"
It's not the question set to be asked naturally and spontaneously when making someone's acquaintances, but for some reason, Shi Qingxuan's fluffy brain feels even fuzzier than usual, taking down the already flimsy brain to mouth filter he has in place.
no subject
"You flatter too much."
Perhaps a bit of charm already goes a long way with Xiao Xingchen, but while his whole head also feels full of bright and colorful flowers, this person might be the most entertaining and fascinating person he's ever known.
But at the question, Xiao Xingchen's brows raise, and his mouth opens without words at first.
"Oh, um-- yes. I am human. Are... are you?"
The answer likely makes it sound as if he's questioning himself, despite being certain about being human! He's fairly sure. It's entirely possible that something strange happened after being brought to this place, where the impossible constantly happens.
no subject
Shi Qingxuan settles on the damp grass, fingers intent on unraveling the careful twists in his lap. Should he make a necklace, instead? He can't help but congratulate himself on not using the "m" word around humans--hey can get rather odd about their own mortality--it slips his mind that asking someone whether they are human isn't quite in the realm of polite or discreet conversation either.
"Hah! I haven't been human for quite a while," comes the too cheerful answer just as discretion flies out the window. The Wind Master has never been stickler for the rules, but he normally took more care around humans, even if they were cultivators.
There's a light of mischief in his eyes as he divulges this with the joy of someone spilling a secret they were reprimanded into guarding.
"But I could feel your qi all the way from... Quite far away! You're practically glowing-- but that's not why I wanted to talk to you. You're just too pretty to ignore!"
At this point it's clear he's getting his points and priorities mixed up, even as the order makes perfect sense in his head.
no subject
Xiao Xingchen kneels down on the ground next to the other man here, feeling a pang of guilt in his chest for being so casual, but the surrounding atmosphere smooths every negative feeling.
"Ah, please excuse me. It's only that you are rather different from the only other immortal I've known."
After leaving his shifu's mountain, he hadn't known any others. Of course, he hadn't had much experience with the cultivation world before retreating from it-- but in a state like this, only warm, pleasant nostalgia about the past filters through.
The surprise and curiosity even override his reaction to more of the effusive compliments. Still, that does have to do with his surprise.
"In particular, you're much more... lively."
no subject
The flowers are too heavy for their joined stems, the knots unraveling halfway onto taking the shape of a necklace in his hands.
"Ah, I ascended early! I suppose life never really got to me before I followed in my older brother's footsteps--now he's a proper immortal, moreso than silly old me, haha. Maybe it's different when you get the chance to grow wise and knowing, first!"
His grin eclipses the sun in its brightness. He knows he's a frivolous creature, and the polite wordings of his new friend do little to cause offense.
no subject
"Ah, well. Wise and knowing might be for some people, but for it to be everyone's goal might make everyone rather dull."
Even without the pleasant haze around his head, he finds those who speak and act differently from the usual cultivator quite entertaining. Like a charming friend of his who has a way with words. Cultivating for cultivation's sake, acquiring knowledge just to use it for oneself-- foolish and charging into the unknown is more Xiao Xingchen's style, anyway!
"I can assure you that you're definitely the most charming immortal that I've ever met."
He faintly feels the need to apologize to Baoshan Sanren for the statement, regardless of how true it is.
no subject
He might have asked for permission under different circumstances, but that was a slim possibility.
"I bet you say that to all the immortals you meet," he parts the flowers too bulky for a proper garland next, twisting the stems to hook between the dark strands, "Well, you're definitely the prettiest cultivator I've ever met, and I used to be one!"
Then again, there is no comparing this young man to the drunken lot he used to study with.
no subject
"I would say that that can't be right, but I admit I haven't seen too many cultivators in my life. So I don't have much say in that."
Not that he pays too much attention to matters like that, but even if he did, how could he judge? He sighs as he watches the clouds above them.
"I didn't have the chance to see much of the world, before I couldn't see at all. This place restored my vision when I was brought here."
Every word sounds cavalier about the situation, no matter how painful it would be to dredge up these memories without the influence of something on his mind. Right now, however, they're having friendly chatter and it merely feels like something relevant to the subject!
no subject
His hands reach for another pick of hydrangea, another round of weaving flowers through that thick braid. Shi Qingxuan has spent years waiting dutifully at the bottom of the mountain while his brother honed his cultivation, but his brother has always, faithfully, come down. He couldn't fathom being sequestered away from the world and never had the patience and resolution for it. Even as a disciple, Shi Qingxuan's weeks were punctuated with irrevernt trips to the nearby towns with his fellow young cultivators. But he was an adolescent, then.
It seems as his new friend has only had a meager number of years to live out his youth.
"You're lucky," he confesses, and perhaps it's hardly his place to make the judgment at all from the little he knows, "You got a second chance, and now you get to see a whole brand new world. Isn't that wonderful? I mean, it's pretty weird so far, and there's some stuff I wish I could unsee, don't get me wrong! But I bet it's still more exciting than wherever you were, before."
no subject
Going on about his life since living on a celestial mountain, the whirlwind year when he left it and went to right wrongs with a good friend by his side, leading to his unfortunate entanglement... it would bore his new friend to go on about it in detail. Though he misses his peaceful life in the coffin house, his thoughts are forced away from dwelling on it for long.
"I definitely understand with wanting to unsee certain things," he says, also in a light tone that contrasts with his actual thoughts on what these certain sights were. "But you're right. Few ever have a second chance, so I shouldn't squander it."
Many figures from his past being here makes it unlikely that it'll be a fresh start. Still, in this mood, anything feels possible.
"At least, perhaps I can do what I never thought of before. If there's no need to night hunt here, and we have to provide for ourselves in... particular ways, then I'm unsure what I should do with all the hours of the day."
Where does he even begin?
no subject
"Who knows when you'll get another chance like this? I know, we should play a game!" And what better way to round up everything a healthy young man should check off his New Life List? Shi Qingxuan ties off the end of the braid with a flourish before scrambling to sit before his new friend.
"I'll list everything I've never gotten to-- wait, we need wine for this. Never mind."
His fine eyebrows furrowed, but only momentarily before mischief shone in his eyes once more.
"Tell me one thing you've always wanted to do, and then I can tell you all about making it happen, if I've ever done it myself."

The hydrangeas aren't too bad, though. Their purple is a nice shade, and as he gets closer, even the scent of them is not so bad. In fact, he doesn't smell their fragrance so much as he... feels it? If that's strange, it doesn't register as such. Before long, he's sitting, and already considering lying down. It's not dignified, and he shouldn't do it, but sitting is a gateway drug, and the longer he's here, the calmer he feels.
He's still very much him, though, as quickly becomes obvious when this stranger starts up a conversation.]
That goes for all of us, surely?
[Can't very well see without eyes. That's just obvious.
Belatedly, he checks himself. This seems to be a respectable gentleman, and so he should really tone down his verbal venom. It's just hard to care about even that right now.]
Come, sit. There's no need to exhaust yourself while taking in the view.
no subject
What's more important is noticing the man's sitting figure. Now that's a fine idea!
Resistant to (most) verbal venom, Xiao Xingchen turns a smile to him.]
Oh, gladly! Thank you.
[Stepping closer, Xiao Xingchen lowers himself to the ground to sit just at the threshold of "respectful distance for strangers". The scent of the fresh grass underneath them only adds to the pleasant lull, and the view before them also serves as a useful momentary distraction from the awkward subject of introductions.]
Look at that bunch there. It's about as vivid as your robes. What a lovely shade...
no subject
Of course. Our Yunmeng Jiang sect would settle for no lesser colors.
[Is he... actually trying to take credit for the existence of purple flowers now...? Well, maybe not quite, but close enough to be embarrassing.
He glances over at the other man again, gaze dipping. Jiang Cheng doesn't especially want to lie down on the ground, but he might just settle for using this man's lap. He's not quite ready to suggest that yet, however.]
no subject
A soft breeze passes over the hydrangeas, carrying some petals of all the different colors, and whatever just caused this warm, fuzzy sensation around his head increased its influence twice over.]
Then Yunmeng Jiang Sect is all too lucky to have you, as the color complements you especially well.
[Looking at the ground between them, he spots one of the small hydrangeas that were carried by the wind.
Picking it up, he finds himself acting on an idea before he can even think - is he thinking that much right now anyway? - and so he scoots closer, until he can place the bloom behind the other man's ear.]
no subject
Obviously.
[No color could suit him better. He is his sect, after all. But that's so obvious that he doesn't care to elaborate - and anyway, his company is now busy playing with flowers.
Playing with flowers... and sticking them behind Jiang Cheng's ear. Jiang Cheng isn't sure what to think of the flower-adorning as such, but the gesture from the other man feels solemn and exceptionally gentle. It makes Jiang Cheng want to repay the kindness, and yet he doesn't know how.
Well, he has one idea. After all, if it's something he wants, surely everyone else wants it too?]
... Why don't you lie down.
[He gives his lap a single pat to indicate (sort of) what he means.]
no subject
Young Master, you are very kind.
[With that, Xiao Xingchen happily lies his head down on the other man's lap, letting his eyes drift closed with a happy hum. The lap of a cultivator, having trained endless hours in combat, might not be the softest surface, but the warmth more than makes up for it. What's most important is the idea.
He murmurs, thinking aloud more than wanting to consciously speak:]
The path of life can be twisted and arduous. Any one gesture of kindness can make the journey for another much easier... I would gladly repay this favor for you, however you like.
no subject
... Actually, is it strange that he was the one to offer his lap, after all..? Nah, it's probably fine.
The words resonate with Jiang Cheng, but not in the way they were likely intended. Jiang Cheng's had his suffering, and yet how many people made his journey easier? Did any of them? Even the one person who intended to make it easier only made things worse, in many ways. Jiang Cheng's life might have ended sooner, but would that have been better or worse for everyone else in the end? If he had died, might others not have survived? It's something he's tried hard not to think about, but with his defenses down, even in this peaceful place he can't keep something dark from trying to drag his thoughts down. It doesn't quite work: he keeps floating along on the waves, with no real risk of sinking. But there is that ill-defined something occasionally trying to pull his metaphorical boat down all the same.]
... I've had enough favors to last me this lifetime. I don't need any from you.
[And with that said, he's just going to gently pet the man's head. Maybe Jiang Cheng has next to no experience with loving physical contact between people, but petting dogs has always seemed natural enough, and so petting a human is probably not a bad thing either.
He's enjoying it, anyway.]
no subject
The petting calls forth a peal of Xiao Xingchen's laughter, a little louder than usual before he quickly stifles them, giggling behind lips pressed together tight. When he can speak again, he has to ask:]
Is this something you do often? It feels so nice, and yet--
[He has to still hold himself back a little.]
No one has done this to me. At least, I don't remember anything like this.
[Patting others on the head is more of what he's used to. Either way, it's an interesting experience to be on the other end of it for once!]
no subject
Of course I don't do it often.
["Of course" isn't really something he can use in that context, let alone with someone he's never met before, but Jiang Cheng is Jiang Cheng, and so he will use it anyway.]
... If you like it, just enjoy it.
no subject
[Xiao Xingchen shifts his head slightly, face rubbing against the other man's lap in an attempt to get comfortable, with more movement than he would make when trying to ready himself for sleep in a bed.
This is going to warrant profuse apologies later.
But after a moment of the warmth of a lap, the comforting touch to his hair, all surrounded by the summer-like air after the rain... he's still a bit more concerned about the other man. He turns around to look up at him with a curious look in his eyes.]
It really is so nice like this, but it's unfair that I'm the only one who gets to lie down. Why don't I lie down, and you can also lie down and rest your head on my front?
[His torso isn't exactly soft, however.]
no subject
Jiang Cheng's lap is about to become a whole lot less comfortable with all that rubbing, though, and as relaxed as he is, totally free of shame about the physical reaction, he does feel some embarrassment for potentially inconveniencing his guest along the line. It's that, more than anything else - though this odd relaxed feeling definitely helps - that convinces him to go along with this gentleman's suggestion.]
Alright.
[He stops petting, a little reluctantly, to facilitate the change in position. Even in this haze, it feels a little strange to lie down on someone's chest... but not enough to stop him, and certainly not enough to keep him from enjoying the position once he settles.]
no subject
Oh, I apologize for that. But if you need any help, I can take care of that as well.
[Maybe to any other cultivator passing by (from a distance) and seeing this, they'd immediately know that something about this area isn't right.
He drapes his arm around the other man as he lays down, taking a deep breath, chest rising and falling deeply. Right now, he doesn't very much care about what others will think. It's pleasant to just lie like this with someone and not having to care about anything else.]
